I love the suggestion of movement flowing in the background. Makes me think of the breezes often presented by a spring storm. The sky is dark and flowers sway any way the wind blows. Beautiful painting. The only suggestions I have are maybe a little more contrast of highlights and shadow in the flower body. I really like the stem and leaf.
My first choice would have been a dark green background, similar to the photo. But the assigment was to personnalize the backround, so I choose for myself ;) the ouside wall of my house. It is a mix of chalk, shells and some rusty color. I pushed the flow as Angela already stated.
The other thing I did was to tilt a little the leave to let the flower alone against the wall.
I am quite happy with stem and leaves, but i find the petals quite muddy now that I see them posted. :(
I fully agree with you Angela with contrast. That's another reason to go back to the easel.
I agree with Angela. Your background has very appealing sense of movement and clearly communicates space behind the tulip. It is a really nice choice.
In order to communicate sunlight the value difference between light and dark areas should be much bigger. The leaves appear to have too dark and vibrant green-yellow highlights and hence became very noticeable. On the other side the tulip lacking details and deep shadows, having 2-3 close subsequent values became less important and does not attract attention.
