Challenge 57 - Private Moment

My dear PADT artists.

Lately, I have been traveling a lot. And being away for many weeks did impact my ability to post a new challenge timely. On a positive side, travels gave me an opportunity to see new places, get some new ideas and meet some incredible people.

With a New Year just around a corner, I would like to sincerely thank you and express how much joy PADT and all of you have generously given to the artist world around us, and wish for your good health, many amazing paintings, joy and happiness in return.

Wishing you a Happy New Year with the hope that you will have many blessings in the year to come.

About the composition

This photo was taken in the lobby of Hilton hotel in Indianapolis, US. I fell in love with this very subtle play of light all around, uncountable number of amazing light effects and mystery. If I could, I would have added a few more interesting still life objects, to complement the surrounding. However, being a hotel lobby, that wasn't an option.

And that is what I will leave to all of you to play with, and enhance the composition as you would like to. A hand written letter with a rose will inspire a love letter, or a book and reading glasses would look great - let your imagination guide you in choosing what appeals to you the most.

Please send your paintings by January 10, 2016. The next challenge will be posted on January 11, 2016.

Challenge 56 - Still Life with Lemons

It was a great joy seeing all PADT paintings and drawings from the last challenge.
Thank you very much for participating and sharing this special time with us.

About the composition

This still life was placed in a light box with a small window at the top left and photographed.
Such setup created a very dark background and impression that objects are emerging from the darkness behind them, very often seen in Old Master's paintings.

I hope you would love this setup as much as I do and reward all of us at PADT with your beautiful paintings and drawings.

Please send your paintings by October 25, 2015. The next challenge will be posted on October 26, 2015.

Painting Technique:
My first painting in which I have used painting in layers. A real challenge for me because I had to wait until the previous layer is completely dry before the next.

I myself am very pleased with the result, particularly as to the colors of the background.

I have tried to approach the colors as well as possible by mixing colors. I found that the colors from the photo were not pure colors but "old" colors that I find very beautiful.

I have added  the shadows  because without the shadows it looked like the bowl and the cherries were hanging in the air. Now there is the idea that they are standing on something.

Challenge 55 - Bowl with Cherries

A serious effort was happily invested by each artist who participated into creating a painting for our previous challenge. And I would like to sincerely Thank You for that in the name of all PADT artists and art admirers who frequently visit and enjoy our blog.
I was deeply touched by your emails communicating admirable enthusiasm and determination to complete the paintings in spite of everyday challenges life brings to us. It uniquely communicates how important it is to nurture our inner happiness, spiritual health, and need and & desire to practice, learn, and create.

About the composition

This setup represents a classical still life with the main light source positioned at the top left corner, and shadows heading into diagonally opposite direction. I took this photograph in the room with big windows and a lot of natural light coming in. This resulted in a significant amount of this window light being reflected from the surrounding walls back into the composition, and causing pronounced and distinguished reflected light in the shadow areas.

Instead of dark flat background, which is what we usually get in the photographs I added digitally some interest, so that the whole composition looks a little more closer to ready to paint as is. Of course you are free to use any amount of artistic license your like and create your own unique interpretation.

You will notice that there are no hard edges in the composition. All is soft, gracefully blending from one color into another, creating almost magical appearance and intriguing reality.

Please send your paintings by September 13, 2015. The next challenge will be posted on September 14, 2015.
