Jenni Twidle

 9.5"x7"
Gouache on sage green mount board

Jenni Twidle

Artist Comments:  It is actually painted on a mid green background and there is a lot more green in the flower. The yellow and white are ok. Two photos of the same painting are included in this post - the top one is  better, but the flower markings don't show up as in the original in the top photo.

Challenge 44 - Lady's Slipper Orchid

The last challenge "Antique Rugs" brought forth so many exquisite paintings each of which demonstrated the creativity and imagination which  transforms a photo into art. I want to thank everyone for participating and sharing their beautiful paintings. Whenever a new painting appears on PADT, it is so nice to study it and see how the artist interpreted the photo. An artist  recently wrote  that when she visits PADT she feels like it's a "tranquil oasis in the internet" and I am grateful to everyone for their support in making it so.

About the composition

I had  been away from home for the last few weeks visiting Montreal and I shot the photo for this challenge in Montréal Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanique de Montréal ). With many indoor greenhouses, thousands of plants and bird species, this beautiful garden is one of the largest nature museums in the world.  And the rainforest greenhouse in the garden certainly provided a warm escape from Montreal's chilly weather :)

The "Lady's Slipper Orchid" in this picture is  a very fascinating flower. In many orchids, one of the petals forms a landing platform for insects; here the petal is transformed into an elegant pouch-shaped insect trap. Unlike the pitcher plant which has a similar pouch, this orchid does not trap insects to eat them. It tricks the insects into helping in the fertilization process.

The petal which is shaped like the trap is called the lip of the orchid and lures the visiting insects and they invariably end up falling inside the pouch which has very slippery walls. However, one location in the pouch which is closest to the pollens is not slippery, here we have tiny upward pointing hairs. As the insect climbs up on this "hair ladder", squeezing past the pollens, it either carries away the orchid's pollens or leaves the pollens  from another flower here.

In this challenge I invite you to use this reference photo for your paintings and drawings to paint this exotic intelligent flower.

Cat on Chair

Medium  Watercolor on watercolor paper 7" X 9"

A difficult study. All the patterns were very difficult to do even though I first did a small beginning sketch to try to figure the pattern out.
I loved the colors of the painting  I found the bottom carpet to be to overwhelming to the composition so I exchanged it for a cat on the chair.to try and center the composition.
After all in my house there always seems to be a cat on the chair!!

Challenge 43 - Antique Rugs

As we begin  the first challenge this year 2014, I would like to once again wish all of us a very very Happy New Year!

Each of the beautiful paintings in the last challenge was such a visual delight. For PADT  visitors and artists it was as if each day in the holiday season brought a new gift  - the unmatched pleasure of seeing a wonderful new painting!

I hope this year brings many new exciting opportunities for all of us to do what we love so much - paint and draw and explore new horizons in art.

Thank You!!

About the composition

I visited a friend of mine, such a gorgeous human being, and very dedicated admirer and antique rugs collector. Needless to say how many still life compositions crossed my mind as soon as I saw this breathtaking display of antique tapestries and rugs. I listened to many  wonderful history lessons and stories about people crossing the continents & deserts, with one of the rugs you see here displayed, being old 134 years.

In my personal opinion, this is the most complex challenge I posted so far on PADT. I hope you will collect your artistic courage and give it a chance to surprise you.

12"x 8"
coloured pencil and pastel on black Canford paper

Artist comments - I had very great difficulty photographing this. The paper was not really suitable for coloured pencil because it would not take many layers. I ended up embellishing it with pastels!

Title:  Contemplation
Size:   9x12
Medium & Support:  Color Pencil on Artagain black paper
Painting Technique:  First off I want to tell you all what a great job you did, this was a toughie, at least for me.  This is black paper and getting back to white was tough.  I did the rose mostly in watercolor white pencil will a little yellow and pinks.  But object is to finish and learn something and that I did, just squeaking in under the wire.  Happy Holidays to all!!!

  • Naam schilderijRomantiek (Romance)
  • Artist: Renate Arends
  • Size: 24 x 30cm.
  • Medium & Support:  Watercolor and gouache on aqua board
  • Artist Blogwww.renatearends.blogspot.nl

* Painting Process:
After I made the sketch with pencil I have made the part that had to be blackened, black, with the exception of the glass and the leg of the glass. I gave the glass itself and the leg of the glass  a watery layer black with cutouts for the pieces here and there where the glass was shiny.

Where needed I took the paint away  with a clean damp brush  so that a dull white showed.. This was also the time I painted in the wine. After this, I painted the brown section containing the white shadow (in the middle) and the black shadow (right).

After this I colored the rose, petal after petal. I had difficulties with finding the right color. No yellow, no pink. Ultimately, it is a mix of white gouache with orange watercolor paint. After the Rose was finished I put the details in the glass. Finally I gave the black and Brown sections a last  layer so that small smudges and spots were no longer visible.
