Painting Technique:
My first painting in which I have used painting in layers. A real challenge for me because I had to wait until the previous layer is completely dry before the next.
I myself am very pleased with the result, particularly as to the colors of the background.
I have tried to approach the colors as well as possible by mixing colors. I found that the colors from the photo were not pure colors but "old" colors that I find very beautiful.
I have added the shadows because without the shadows it looked like the bowl and the cherries were hanging in the air. Now there is the idea that they are standing on something.

Challenge 55 - Bowl with Cherries
A serious effort was happily invested by each artist who participated into creating a painting for our previous challenge. And I would like to sincerely Thank You for that in the name of all PADT artists and art admirers who frequently visit and enjoy our blog.
I was deeply touched by your emails communicating admirable enthusiasm and determination to complete the paintings in spite of everyday challenges life brings to us. It uniquely communicates how important it is to nurture our inner happiness, spiritual health, and need and & desire to practice, learn, and create.
About the composition
This setup represents a classical still life with the main light source positioned at the top left corner, and shadows heading into diagonally opposite direction. I took this photograph in the room with big windows and a lot of natural light coming in. This resulted in a significant amount of this window light being reflected from the surrounding walls back into the composition, and causing pronounced and distinguished reflected light in the shadow areas.
Instead of dark flat background, which is what we usually get in the photographs I added digitally some interest, so that the whole composition looks a little more closer to ready to paint as is. Of course you are free to use any amount of artistic license your like and create your own unique interpretation.
You will notice that there are no hard edges in the composition. All is soft, gracefully blending from one color into another, creating almost magical appearance and intriguing reality.
Please send your paintings by September 13, 2015. The next challenge will be posted on September 14, 2015.

Challenge 54 - Still Life - Basket of Fruits (Old Masters Painting)
I am back after visiting New York and as many museums as I possibly could. Majority of them does not allow to photograph, but some do. And I did take advantage of their generous kindness.
This visit proved again and again that there is no better motivation to create beautiful art then spending time looking at beautiful art. Similarly, as we all already know very well, there is no better way to learn, than learn from the best.
The last composition was very challenging for majority of the artists, and we all appreciate so much the brave attempts of a few who did participate and encourage all of us at PADT. Thank you very much!
About the composition
For this challenge and PADT artists I have chosen a portion of fairly large still life composition from the Metropolitan Museum of fine art. This really amazing painting has very pronounced all important elements of a good still life composition we can all learn from.
You can create a similar still life composition of your own, or choose only portion of this one such as the plate with figs or branch with fruits, as long as you pay attention to the following important elements.
- the light source is positioned at the top right corner, consequently all cast shadows follow the opposite direction, bottom-left.
- all shadow edges are very soft
- branches in the background partially appear from and partially disappear into dark background
- the back edge of the table is barely visible, and only behind the basket, to help communicate depth in the space
- the objects at the front are intentionally positioned closer to the viewer almost offering themselves, partially off the table so that they can create long and pronounced drop down cast shadows
- the colors of the objects in the foreground are brighter and more saturated, the colors of the objects in the background are darker and significantly less saturated
- the eye level (horizon line), even though not so distinctly pronounced as it would have been if this had been a landscape painting, is positioned at the brightest portion of the fruits in the basket, around top left golden mean.
Please send your paintings by July 26, 2015. The next challenge will be posted on July 27, 2015.

Challenge 53 - Easter in the Garden
About the composition
This sweet lady stole my heart when I recently visited Centennial botanical garden in Toronto.
It was Easter week and she carried adorable basket full of chocolates smiling and offering to every kid that entered the garden.
I told her that I am an artist and have a lot of fellow artists who would be very happy to paint her portrait if she would be so kind to pose for me so that I can take her picture and use as a reference. She gladly agreed and now we have very adorable subject to paint in this challenge. I hope you would really enjoy painting her portrait.
Please send your paintings by June 14, 2015. The next challenge will be posted on June 15, 2015.
