Challenge 47 - Varadero - Cuba

My passion and love for flowers, especially roses made me feel as if I received a very special and beautiful present with each new painting you kindly shared with the rest of us. I thank  you for that special, heartwarming feeling and hope each of you felt the same.

 About the composition

In the spirit of celebrating warm, sunny and beautiful places on earth, for this challenge I am posting a picture of the Varadero sunset in Cuba.

The colors in the sky have virtually unlimited number of shades, and it is an excellent practice for mixing colors and  capturing the mood and atmosphere. Also, knowing that yellow and violet are complementary colors, it is a challenge to keep the yellow sparkling clean next to the violet, especially in watercolors.,

Please send your paintings by August 26, 2014. The next challenge will be posted on August 17, 2014.

Artist Notes:

I did not set out to do 2 paintings but the first painting, I was not happy with the color of the rose or the background effect. It looked altogethr too heavy. I could not get the light to shine through the petals so I tried another technique for painting 2

I used a different color combination for the rose  and did lots of thin washes similar to using water color to get a lighter effect on the petals. I also decided to make it a design rather than a  direct copy, I think I prefer that one.

Challenge 46 - Beautiful Orange Rose - Bathing on the Sun

I  am very happy that winter is finally over. In Canada also, not just in the rest of the world. I have to thank all of you for making my days much warmer and brighter with each new posted challenge. I am sure all of us enjoyed each new painting enormously. I want to thank each of the participants  for sharing their beautiful paintings; each painting is so uniquely lovely and inspirational.  Thank You!

About the composition

I believe we, as artists, are very sensitive and reactive to each and every influence. When the influence brings strong emotions and inspiration, such as the story behind this challenge, it is even better.

A friend of mine told me a story about an amazing woman, who -  in spite of a very challenging work environment in a rapidly downsizing company and her own health issues -  did incredible things to help each and every member of her team to find the next job. She used to say "I will not go to sleep until I put all my children to bed." The story has a very happy ending - all members of her team found very good new jobs and life moves on.

Truly  touched by this heartwarming  story, I thought that we have so much kindness and beauty among us, all around us. And, I was inspired to  find for this challenge something truly beautiful, something which reminds all of us of the beauty with which our world is blessed. I spent hours searching  for a subject for this challenge, trying to find something unique, inspiring and glorious. And here it is -  an amazing golden yellow-orange rose, full of life and inspiration. I invite all of us to celebrate and welcome this wonderful new season by painting and drawing  together in this challenge.

Please send your paintings by June 29, 2014. The next challenge will be posted on June 30, 2014.

Artist Comments:
 Painting 1  - "Just the Pot" 11"x14"
Medium: Acrylic on board
I tried the pot on it's own first as it's a while since I used acrylics and after using water color ,I really had to work at the painting to get the depth of the color and feeling of clay.

Painting 2 - "Pot and Table Leg" 12"X9"
Medium: Acrylic on board
The 2nd painting was another attempt but I wasn't happy with the final composition. I find the back shadows distract from the main objects.

Challenge 45 - Approximately 1820 Clay Water Pot

Many of us simply adore flowers. Thanks to all of you at PADT, in the last challenge, we all enjoyed a spectacular display of personal interpretations of one of the most praised flowers on earth – Orchid. Not any Orchid, but one of a kind which proudly takes high place in many most prestigious garden and flower shows.

It did remind us that the winter is almost over and the time of the blooms and gorgeous display of sunshine and glorious spring and summer flowers is just about to start.

Many PADT visitors told me that each painting in this challenge warmed their hearts during the long winter cold and brought joy and happiness making them look forward to the upcoming spring, joy and sunshine – Thank you for that!

About the composition
Last week I vised Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto (Canada), the museum of world culture and natural history. Needless to say how much I enjoyed walking for many hours among artifacts  which are hundreds and thousands of years old, and are so full of character, reminding one of  an  old world long gone by.
The artifacts I am always particularly drawn towards are old pots and hand carved wood furniture. They have so much personality in them, silently telling the amazing stories of the people who used them and cared about them. Whenever I am visiting a new place or a museum, I am constantly hunting for the next one-of-a-kind I have never seen before trying to decrypt the hidden message it carries through the centuries.

This time, in the Toronto Museum, I was very pleasantly surprised to find a number of completely furnished rooms with emphasis on the early French and British cultural legacy. The whole appearance, floor, walls, windows, fireplaces and decorations were as it was at that time, many years ago. It was so beautiful and so heartwarming. I just imagined myself sitting on that old hand carved wooden chair, playing the piano with hand painted Last Supper on its wood cover and listening to the sounds of  a log burning  in the fireplace mixed with the sounds of melting snow and the coming spring.

In one of the English middle class decorated rooms (dating to approximately 1820), I found this full of character, handmade clay pot probably used for hand washing or watering plants. The pot still retains a portion of its initial glazing. In the room full of bookshelves, piano, paintings and antique chairs and tables, it was placed next to a heavily carved wooden table with shadows of the cross wired windows falling on them. The silent call to include it as our next PADT challenge was irresistible.

The whole room was enclosed in a heavy glass walls so it did take many shots before I managed to eliminate the reflections and get a sufficiently clear picture. Just imagine living at that time, two centuries ago, and try to infuse its charm in this small portion of the middle class English household.

Please send your paintings by May 18, 2014. The next challenge will be posted on May 19, 2014.

Process: I am still finding watercolor to be a real challenge after painting with acrylic and oil mostly before. The flower was more difficult to perfect than I thought it would be.I found the background too overwhelming for the subject so did two paintings.
